about

Ad Vanderveen – Heart Of Every Town

For 4 decades and 30+ albums Ad Vanderveen has written songs that are infused with traditional styles such as Folk, Country and Rock’n’Roll.
Since the 1990s the term Americana has been invented to describe and market this mix of music, but both the genre’s and Vanderveen’s development go back much further than that.
Delving deeper into his musical ancestry for this project, Vanderveen takes his music to church to explore the well established historical link between hymns and folk/country music.

Both musically and lyrically this goes right to the core of a number of personal points of interest, as well as some developments going on in our society.
Around the world churches have become obsolete, their religion and heritage abandoned, at best converted into sites for other purposes, or simply demolished.
Vanderveen is quick to say he does not belong to any church, although he considers himself to be a religious person in the original sense of the word.

“Religion means reconnection and that’s interesting because a lot of people seem to have a sense of being disconnected. The church brought on its own demise and impopularity by centuries of derailing and corruption, but there’s still a lot of lasting value to the sense of community it represents.” according to the singer-songwriter. “This is a matter that goes to my heart and undoubtedly not only mine”.

He further adds:
“A church is the heart of every town – all over the world – and I think this is something we should honor, despite the negative associations of nowadays.
By bringing music and poetry back there and writing and recording new songs, there is a reconnection both to the spirit of the music, as well as to the people attending concerts eventually.

This particular church where we chose to work, the Piterkerk in the old town of Lippenhuizen, Friesland in the north of the Netherlands, is a fine example of how I’d like to envision the future of many churches.
The building has been revised and restored according to original standards, it has great acoustics and a wonderful historically revised organ, built by Van Dam in the 1800s.
It’s a place for people to gather around and enjoy serious music, for partying and entertainment there’s enough other places already.”

‘Heart Of Every Town’ features 9 new original compositions and the arrangements of vocal, acoustic guitar and church organ are enhanced by choir, pedal steel, electric guitar, bass and drums.
